Darin’s Story
My name is Darin Singh and in April 2023 I was diagnosed with a life-changing
autoimmune disease, IgG4, which has viciously attacked my organs, primarily my
kidneys. I currently have end-stage kidney disease and my kidneys are beyond repair. I am sharing my story in the hopes that I will be able to find a live kidney donor to urgently help me.
Since my diagnosis a year ago, life has taken an unexpected turn. I continue to struggle and manage my symptoms one day at a time through a strict regime of medication and significant lifestyle changes. However, my doctors have advised that my kidneys will continue to deteriorate and that I am in urgent need of dialysis and a kidney transplant. I still have dreams for my future and so much I want to accomplish in this world. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible until I find a living kidney donor.Receiving a kidney would mean the chance at a normal life and accomplishing all the hopes and dreams that I have for myself.
Receiving a kidney would mean being able to start a family with my beautiful wife and have more time to spend with my extended family.
Receiving a kidney would mean the freedom to eat foods that I love without worrying about whether my sodium and potassium levels from the foods I eat will make me sicker.
Receiving a kidney would mean the opportunity to participate in an Ironman event in Copenhagen that I had been looking forward to prior to my diagnosis.I am 30 years old and have always been incredibly healthy. Before my diagnosis, I was an athlete, participating in marathons, triathlons, and even international Ironman competitions. These events were something I looked forward to regularly and planned my calendar around. This was a passion of mine, and I was always supported by loved ones who were equally excited to see me compete and cheer me on from the sidelines.
I recently married my beautiful wife Samantha, and have enjoyed traveling the world together, hiking in various parts of Ontario, cooking together and exploring new cuisines. I am a dedicated husband, son, brother, and uncle. More than anything, I love being around family and friends, and never miss an opportunity to spend time with them.Because I’m so young, there is so much in life that I have to look forward to. I look at my nieces and think about how I want to be a father, teaching my own children to ride a bike and play sports like I taught my niece. I think about how I want to travel and experience the world. I think about all I want to achieve. I even recently learned of the Transplant Games, an athletic event tailored for transplant donors and recipients!
Although my life is very different now, I remain hopeful that I can still build a life worth living, find joy, and continue to build memories with those I love.
Finding a kidney donor would mean getting my life back in all the ways that make it meaningful. My hope is that by sharing my story widely, I can find a potential live kidney donor and regain the life I once knew. At the very least, I hope to inspire those who read this to learn more about organ donation and how much of a difference it could make for those in my position. Regardless of whether you are considering organ donation, I humbly ask that you please share this within your networks so that I and so many others in my position may find the help they need. If I have inspired you to be a potential donor, please contact me at kidneyfordarin@gmail.com.
